The 2017-2018 NBA season hasn’t kicked off just yet, but with C.J. McCollum back with the Portland Trail Blazers for another season, it seems the Blazers will continue to run an efficient play that can get McCollum some quality open 3-point looks. That play is the 1/2/1 Give and Go 3-point play that was broken down last season here.
The play diagram is provided below.
The Blazers recently ran the play to perfection in a preseason game against the Toronto Raptors on October 5, 2017. Watch as McCollum’s initial defender (Norman Powell) gets tied up behind the two screen setters while McCollum runs his route. Then, second year player Jakob Poeltl doesn’t challenge McCollum on the catch, which allows McCollum just enough time to get a wide-open look and sink the three before Powell can contest the shot.
Last season McCollum averaged 23.0 points while shooting over 42% from 3-point range. This season he and Damian Lillard along with Jusuf Nurkic for a whole season will try to once again lead Portland toward another playoff berth.
